Filipowski (Philipowski) Jan Piotr, Farm Labourer (1835-1899) Kleszczewo, the son of Ignatz Filipowski & Ewa Teresia Skwierowska, m. (01 Nov 1857) Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Trąbki Wielkie, Rosalia Julianna Grabowska (1834-1908) Elganowo, the daughter of Michael Grabowski & Anna Szulc. Family—Sobowidz; Pauline (1858-1946), Postołowo; August Franz (1860-1860), Franz Johann (1862), Rosalia Anna (1864), Marianna (1866-1867), Julianna (1868-1868), Joseph (1869) & Bertha (1873-1874). The family left Postołowo for Hamburg where Bertha took ill aboard the “Fritz Reuter” before departure and died 16 Dec 1874 and was buried in Hamburg 18 Dec 1874. Only Pauline remained aboard the “Fritz Reuter” 16 Dec 1874 arriving at Napier 13 Mar 1875. Listed aboard was Pauline Philipowski 16 & family. Johann & Rosalia soon made their way to London where they set aboard the “Earl of Zetland” 16 Mar 1875, arriving at Port Chalmers, Dunedin 3 Jun 1875. Listed aboard were—John Philipowski 35, Rosalia 34 & Joseph 5. On the 4th of July, while at the Caversham immigration barracks, Rosalia gave birth to Johanna (1875). They resided at Waihola where Johann worked as a platelayer on the lines and later worked as a labourer. Here they had their youngest, John (Philips) (1878). The 82’ Freeholders listed Johann as owning land to the value of £50 at Waihola and was naturalised as a New Zealand citizen 10 Oct 1893. Just before his death 11 Mar 1898, Johann gifted section 16, block 16, Nore Street, Waihola, to the Catholic Bishop for the erection of a church there. Johann died 27 Dec 1899 and Rosalia died 9 Sep 1908. Both are buried at the Waihola Cemetery.
Pauline Philipowski m. (09 Oct 1880) St. Mary’s, Milton, Joseph Orlowski, the son of Joseph Alexander Orłowski & Bridget Parobkowicz. Family—Waihola; Victoria, Rose, Edward Adolph, Ignatius Joseph (Arthur Joseph Taylor) & Bernard. The family later migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in the late 1880’s where they lived out their remaining years. Here they had two sons—Northcote; Daniel O’Connell & Trentham; John. Pauline died in South Melbourne 14 May 1946 aged about 88 years and is buried at the Hiedleberg Cemetery, Melbourne.
